JCPL EV Driven Program Closing July 15: Last Chance for NJ Incentives

By Michael Malfettone, Licensed Master Electrician·May 13, 2026·6 min read

If you live in Jersey Central Power & Light territory and you have been putting off your Level 2 EV charger installation, your window is closing fast. The JCPL EV Driven Program — New Jersey's most generous EV incentive stack for JCPL customers — officially closes on July 15, 2026. After that date, the rebates go away and there is no confirmed replacement program on the horizon.

Here is what the program covers, how much you can get, and what you need to do before the deadline.

What Is the JCPL EV Driven Program?

The EV Driven Program is a demand-response and incentive program offered through Jersey Central Power & Light in partnership with the NJ Board of Public Utilities. It was designed to shift EV charging to off-peak hours, reduce grid stress, and make the transition to electric vehicles more affordable for JCPL residential and small business customers.

The program has two main components: a Level 2 charger rebate for hardware and installation costs, and a vehicle incentive for qualifying new EV purchases. Both are available through the July 15, 2026 deadline — but you need to be enrolled and have your charger installed before the cutoff to qualify.

How Much Can You Get?

The JCPL EV Driven Program offers incentives up to:

  • Level 2 charger hardware rebate: Up to $500 toward a qualifying Level 2 EVSE (ENERGY STAR-certified units only)
  • Installation rebate: Up to $1,500 toward licensed electrician installation costs
  • New EV vehicle incentive: Up to $5,000 for qualifying new battery electric vehicle purchases made in conjunction with program enrollment

That is up to $7,000 in combined incentives for JCPL customers who purchase an EV and install a Level 2 charger before the July 15 deadline. Even if you already own your EV and just need the charger, the $2,000 combined hardware and installation rebate is significant.

Who Qualifies?

To qualify for the JCPL EV Driven Program you must:

  • Have a JCPL residential account at the service address where the charger will be installed
  • Install a Level 2 (240V) EVSE — 120V Level 1 cords do not qualify
  • Use an ENERGY STAR-certified charger model on the approved equipment list
  • Have installation performed by a licensed NJ electrical contractor who can provide permits
  • Submit your application before July 15, 2026 — retroactive applications are not accepted

JCPL territory covers a wide swath of central and northern New Jersey, including parts of Morris, Union, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties. If you are unsure whether your address is in JCPL or PSE&G territory, you can check by entering your address on the JCPL website or calling their customer service line.

What Chargers Are on the Approved List?

Popular ENERGY STAR-certified Level 2 chargers that typically appear on JCPL's approved equipment list include the ChargePoint Home Flex, Enel X JuiceBox 48, Emporia Level 2, and the Wallbox Pulsar Plus. The Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3 and later) is also ENERGY STAR certified but check the current JCPL list at enrollment time, as approved models do get updated.

Our recommendation for most NJ homes is the ChargePoint Home Flex or the Enel X JuiceBox 48 — both are 48A capable, Wi-Fi connected for demand-response scheduling, and supported by robust apps for charge tracking. The Wi-Fi connectivity is important under the EV Driven program because JCPL reserves the right to shift charging during peak demand events.

Do You Need a Panel Upgrade First?

This is the question we hear most often. A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240V circuit — typically a 50A breaker for a 40A charger or a 60A breaker for a 48A charger. If your panel does not have room for that breaker or your service is already near capacity, you may need a panel upgrade or a subpanel addition before the charger can be installed.

In our experience serving JCPL-territory homes in Middlesex, Union, and Morris Counties, about 40% of older homes need at least a breaker panel inspection and roughly 20% need additional capacity work before the charger can safely go in. The good news is that installation costs — including the panel work needed to accommodate the charger — are part of the up-to-$1,500 installation rebate calculation.

We can assess your panel during a free on-site quote visit and tell you exactly what is needed to qualify before you submit your program application.

The Permit Question: Can You Skip It?

No. The JCPL EV Driven Program explicitly requires that installation be performed by a licensed NJ electrical contractor and that permits be pulled with your local municipality. Any installation done without permits will disqualify you from the rebate — and more importantly, an unpermitted 240V circuit in your home is a liability issue that can affect your homeowner's insurance and create problems when you sell.

In New Jersey, a Level 2 EV charger installation requires an electrical permit through your municipality's construction office and a certificate of approval from a licensed NJ electrical inspector. We handle the entire permit process for every job — it is included in our quoted price, not an add-on.

How to Apply Before the July 15 Deadline

Here is the timeline to hit the deadline comfortably:

  • Now through June 1: Schedule your free on-site assessment and get a written quote.
  • June 1–15: Confirm charger model, submit JCPL program pre-enrollment (if required by your utility).
  • June 15–July 1: Installation day — we pull permits, install the circuit and charger, schedule inspection.
  • By July 15: Inspection passed, installation complete, rebate application submitted.

Do not wait until the last week of June. Permit offices in some municipalities schedule inspections 2–3 weeks out in summer, and a missed inspection slot can push your timeline past the rebate deadline.
