NJ Energy Efficiency Incentives in 2026: How to Get Rebates on Electrical Upgrades

Malfettone Electric LLC·April 7, 2026·7 min read

New Jersey homeowners planning electrical upgrades in 2026 have access to more rebates and incentives than at any point in recent history — but getting the full benefit requires knowing which programs to apply for and in what order. PSE&G customers can access up to $7,500 in cash rebates plus $25,000 in zero-interest financing. Federal tax credits add another substantial layer on top. Here's how it all works.

We walk through incentive programs with nearly every customer who calls about panel upgrades, EV chargers, and heat pump wiring. The programs change frequently, the eligibility rules are specific, and the order of operations matters more than most people realize. This guide covers what's available in 2026 and how to get the most out of it.

What Is the PSE&G Whole Home Energy Savings Program?

PSE&G's Whole Home Energy Savings Program is the flagship incentive for NJ homeowners electrifying their homes. It's available to PSE&G customers — which covers most of Hudson County, Essex County, and large portions of northeastern New Jersey.

Here's what it offers:

  • Up to $7,500 in direct cash rebates for qualifying energy upgrades including heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, smart thermostats, insulation, and electrical panel upgrades done as part of an electrification project.
  • Up to $25,000 in zero-interest financing for project costs not covered by rebates. This is essentially an interest-free loan repaid through your PSE&G bill over up to 10 years.
  • Free home energy assessment through an approved contractor to identify what upgrades qualify.

The program is most valuable when you're switching from gas to electric for heating, water heating, or both. A panel upgrade done in isolation typically doesn't qualify, but a panel upgrade done to support a qualifying heat pump installation does. The bundling matters — and it's one of the main reasons we recommend planning your electrification upgrades together rather than one at a time.

JCPL (Jersey Central Power & Light) customers in western and central New Jersey have access to similar programs through the NJ Clean Energy Program directly. Ask us which programs apply to your address when you call.

NJ Clean Energy Program: What's Available in 2026

The New Jersey Clean Energy Program (NJCEP), administered by the NJ Board of Public Utilities, offers rebates for energy-efficient equipment independent of your utility company. These can often be stacked with utility programs for a larger combined benefit.

Key NJCEP offerings in 2026:

  • Heat pump rebates: $1,000 – $3,000 for qualifying air-source heat pumps meeting minimum efficiency thresholds. Cold-climate heat pumps — those rated to operate efficiently down to -13°F, which NJ winters can demand — may qualify for higher rebates.
  • Heat pump water heater rebates: Up to $750 for heat pump water heaters replacing electric or gas tank water heaters.
  • EV charger incentives: Available through PSE&G's EV Accelerate at Home program — up to $250 back on Level 2 charger purchase plus installation cost support. See our EV charger installation page for details on what's involved.

Federal IRA Tax Credits for Electrical Upgrades

The Inflation Reduction Act created a suite of federal tax credits for home energy improvements that remain in effect for 2026. These are dollar-for-dollar reductions in your federal tax liability — not deductions — so they have real cash value.

The credits most relevant to electrical work:

  • 25C — Heat Pumps: 30% of the cost of a qualifying air-source heat pump, up to $2,000 per year. Includes equipment and installation labor.
  • 25C — Electrical Panel Upgrades: 30% of the cost of a qualifying panel upgrade, up to $600 per year, when done in connection with other qualifying energy equipment. Your panel must be upgraded to at least 200 amps to qualify. See our panel upgrade services for what's typically included.
  • 30C — EV Chargers: 30% of the cost of EV charger equipment and installation, up to $1,000, for Level 2 home chargers.
  • 25D — Residential Clean Energy Credit: 30% of the cost of solar panels and battery storage with no annual cap. This stacks with the above credits.

Federal tax credits are claimed on your annual tax return. If you're doing multiple projects in one year, coordinating timing to maximize the per-category annual limits is worth discussing with your tax advisor.

Which Electrical Upgrades Qualify for Rebates?

Not every electrical job qualifies for incentives, but the upgrades that matter most for modern NJ homes generally do:

  • Panel upgrades to 200A or higher: Qualify for the federal 25C credit (up to $600) when done alongside heat pump or EV charger installation. May qualify for PSE&G rebates as part of an electrification bundle.
  • Dedicated EV charger circuits: Qualify for the federal 30C credit (30%, up to $1,000). PSE&G's EV Accelerate at Home covers up to $250 on charger hardware.
  • Heat pump wiring and circuits: The electrical work for a heat pump installation is typically included in the 25C credit calculation alongside equipment cost.
  • Whole-home rewiring alongside electrification: Partial qualification may apply depending on scope. Proper documentation of the work matters — we itemize projects clearly so qualifying costs are easy to identify.

Work that generally does not qualify: routine repairs, adding outlets, lighting upgrades, and safety-only work unless tied to a qualifying project. Our NJ electrician FAQ covers more of what to expect when planning a project.

How to Stack Multiple Rebates and Maximize Your Savings

The highest-value approach is coordinating multiple upgrades in a single project — panel upgrade, heat pump wiring, and EV charger installation done together. The permit is the same, the mobilization cost is the same, and many rebate programs reward the bundled approach explicitly.

A realistic scenario for a Hudson County homeowner switching from gas heat to a heat pump and adding an EV charger in 2026:

  • PSE&G Whole Home rebate (panel + heat pump bundle): up to $4,500
  • NJCEP heat pump rebate: $1,500
  • Federal 25C heat pump credit: $2,000
  • Federal 25C panel upgrade credit: $600
  • Federal 30C EV charger credit: $800
  • Total potential benefit: approximately $9,400

That's before the PSE&G zero-interest financing option, which means the remaining out-of-pocket cost can be spread over years at 0% interest. The math makes a meaningful difference in what these projects actually cost.
