Common Questions
Panel Assessment FAQs
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
That depends on your specific home — your panel size, square footage, heating type, and existing appliances all factor in. Most homeowners are surprised to find they don't need one. Submit the form and a licensed NJ master electrician will run the actual calculation on your home and give you a written answer within 24 hours.
How does the free assessment work?
Fill out the form with your home details. A licensed NJ master electrician from our team reviews your information, runs a professional residential load calculation, and emails you a written result within 24 hours. If your panel has the capacity, we'll tell you. If it doesn't, you'll get a written quote at the same time — no extra step, no service call fee.
What if I don't know my panel size?
Select "Not sure" on the form and add a note. If you can snap a photo of your panel (the gray box in your basement or utility room), we can often confirm the size from that alone. We'll follow up if we need more information.
How much does a panel upgrade cost in NJ if I do need one?
Panel upgrades in New Jersey typically range from $1,500–$4,000 depending on your current service size, whether a new meter socket is required, and permit fees in your municipality. Our assessment includes a written quote if an upgrade is warranted — so you have a real number before making any decisions.
Will PSE&G or JCPL need to come out?
For a panel upgrade, yes — the utility must disconnect and reconnect the meter. Malfettone Electric coordinates directly with PSE&G and JCPL and handles all utility scheduling as part of the job. For an EV charger install where no panel upgrade is needed, utility coordination is typically not required.
Is this really free?
Yes. No service call fee, no credit card, no obligation. We do it free because we're a licensed NJ electrical contractor who can actually do the work if it's needed — and we'd rather earn your business by being straight with you up front.
